Mount
Prospect is located
in the northwest
suburban area of
Chicago,
approximately 26
miles from the city,
and only 6 miles
from O’Hare
International
Airport. The town
is bordered by Des
Plaines, Arlington
Heights, Prospect
Heights, and Elk
Grove Village. The
population of Mount
Prospect is well
over 56,000 people
from many different
ethnic backgrounds.
The town has
numerous excellent
public and private
schools as well as a
strong base of both
retail and
professional
businesses.
Mount
Prospect
incorporated in
1917, rising from a
small farming
community of only
300
people. The town
grew steadily during
land speculations in
the 1920's an d
then the suburban
movements following
World War II. The
baby boom expanded
the population
in the 1950’s
and
1960’s and the
Village began
expanding the
services it
offered. In the
early 1960s, the
business
community in Mount
Prospect took a
giant leap forward
with the
construction of
Randhurst, the first
indoor
air-conditioned mall
in the upper
Midwest. Another
major event
in
the history of the
Village is the
development of
Kensington Business
Center, which serves
as
the
home to several
major national and
international firms
including NTN
Bearing, Searle,
Braun Manufacturing
Cummins Allison
Corp., ITT Technical
Institute and Sayers
Computing.
The most striking
change within the
last 10 years is the
redevelopment of the
downtown area.
Construction of
several new
buildings in this
area greatly changed
the face of the
town. The new
Village Hall along
with several new
condominium
buildings with space
for new shops and
restaurants
transformed this
once sleepy farm
town into a vibrant
and exciting
metropolis.
